About Us
The Seattle Flute Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in 1979 by Felix Skowronek. To honor "all things flute," the SFS presents a yearly season of events, including recitals, masterclasses, workshops, and competitions. Each event features local, national, or international distinguished artists in all avenues of flute playing - performers of classical, jazz, baroque, contemporary, and world music.

Our members are amateur and professional flutists, teachers, students, flute makers, accompanists, listeners, patrons – anyone interested in the flute! The SFS also sponsors a flute choir which rehearses weekly and is open to all members. Our newsletter, published regularly between August and May, contains a calendar of events, articles of interest to members, and advertisements from our commercial and individual members.

The SFS Season typically runs from September through April. Most events throughout the season take place on weekends. Every April, we hold our annual Flute Festival: a flute-filled day of activities including a workshop and recital with a high-caliber guest artist, a Flute Choir Showcase, our All-Members and Young Members Recitals, our Young Artist Competition Finals, and Commercial Exhibits where instruments, music, accessories and other flute-related merchandise are exhibited, demonstrated and sold.

To promote music education and performance experience, the Seattle Flute Society proudly sponsors two annual flute competitions. The Frank and Lu Horsfall Competition is for students in grades 6-12 and takes place every March. Our Young Artist Competition is open to flutists who have not reached their 30th birthday by the date of the competition. After a preliminary recorded round in February, three finalists are chosen to compete live at the annual Flute Festival in April.

In recent years the Seattle Flute Society has sponsored appearances by outstanding artists such as Jennifer Grim, Jim Walker, Leone Buyse, Demarre McGill, Paul Edmund-Davies, Bonita Boyd, Marco Granados, and Denis Bouriakov – to name just a few! With your support, attendance and membership, we will continue to bring acclaimed flutists and events to the area.

Our Mission
The Seattle Flute Society fosters and inspires appreciation of the flute among its members and the general public; promotes collegiality and support within the flute community; educates and inspires the development of flutists at all levels; provides opportunities for local flutists to perform, learn new techniques, and hear performances by professional flutists; encourages the composition of music for the flute; and provides scholarship opportunities for aspiring flutists.
